Each year in the United States, approximately 12,000 children and adolescents
are diagnosed with cancer. On Long Island, there are currently 1,200-1,500
children who are either in active or follow-up treatment. These children,
who sustain medical procedures and doctors appointments on a continual
basis, deserve an opportunity to enjoy a summer camp experience filled
with fun, friendship and hope- just like their healthy peers. Although
the United States is filled with sleepaway camps for children with cancer
there are virtually no day camps, and none available in the entire northeast.
A day camp setting, designed to meet the emotional, social, recreational
and physical needs of the child while allowing them to enjoy the comforts
and safety of their own homes at night, can be a critical component to
their growth, development, hope and well being.
Started in July 2006, the Friedberg JCC
began offering its most significant initiative to date, Sunrise
Day Camp – the only dedicated day
camp in the nation designed for children with cancer on a non-sectarian
basis. The JCC also recognizes the disproportionate financial burden
that families carry when a child is chronically ill and, subsequently,
Sunrise Day Camp is offered at no fee to any camper enrolled.
The Friedberg JCC, which is administering
Sunrise Day Camp, has been serving Long
Island’s south shore community for 44 years. Located in Oceanside,
New York, with centers in both Merrick and Long Beach, the JCC
operates and excels in summer camp, infant day care, pre-school and after-school
activities and services for families, seniors, and people with disabilities,
including a health and wellness center in addition to offering wide-ranging
cultural arts programs.
Sunrise Day Camp is a project of the Friedberg JCC, a not-for-profit
510(c)3 charitable organization. Donations may be made out directly to
"Sunrise Day Camp" or "Friedberg JCC", and are fully
tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
