Who can enroll?
SUNRISE DAY CAMP is open to children ages 3 1/2 to 16, who are in active or
follow-up treatment for cancer. A special program schedule is also offered for
children below the age of 5. The camp is open to all children, on a non-sectarian
basis, who are coping with any type of cancer at any stage, provided their
doctor clears them to participate.
What about siblings?
Siblings of children with cancer have their own special needs, and so
the Friedberg JCC is happy to include siblings in Sunrise Day Camp. Yet
we also recognize that each child is unique. As such, the Friedberg JCC
also offers 7 other camp programs, including theater, travel, arts, general
camping, etc. and also has relationships with some of the finest sleep-away
camps. Working with the family and the sibling - and with Sunrise being
one of the options - we will find the best fit for every sibling who wants
to go to camp.
Who staffs SUNRISE?
SUNRISE DAY CAMP is staffed by counselors, specialists, assistants, and
volunteers, all of whom are specially trained prior to the camp's opening.
Our camp's on-site Director has extensive experience with children and
camping, and our staff-to-camper ratio exceeds 3:1, assuring that every
need of our campers can be accommodated. Click here to learn more about our staff!
What about medical support?
SUNRISE DAY CAMP has a private, air-conditioned wellness center staffed by an
on-site pediatric oncology nurse and supported by volunteer pediatric
oncology doctors from area hospitals. Medications can be easily administered,
and ample indoor areas are provided for children to just "cool down".
In the unlikely event of an emergency during the camp day, rapid transportation
by ambulance to home hospitals is provided.
How long is the camp season?
Campers may enroll for one, two, three or four sessions. Determine what days of the summer work best for your family schedule. If your needs change, call the Sunrise office and let us know. We will be always look to accommodate you as best we can.

What transportation options are available?
SUNRISE is a day camp program, and as such is within driving distance
of most Long Island communities and surrounding boroughs. Therefore, we
encourage parents to drive their children directly to and from the camp,
so as to limit their time on buses and keep them in the most comfortable
environment.
Additional transportation arrangements can be worked out to accommodate
the differing needs of families. For families for whom driving is not an option, a staffed bus is available from select locations in Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx.
What type of food is served?
One of the great advantages of day camping is that children can bring
their own favorite lunches from home, so they never have to wonder what's
on the menu today (of course, we'll refrigerate it). But that's all they
need to bring, as we provide several snacks during the day as well as
juice and other drinks whenever needed. Need something special? No problem;
just let us know and we'll get it. Note that all food served by the camp
is kosher.
Does a child need to attend summer camp to enjoy year round programs?
We understand that children may not be ready physically or emotionally to attend camp during the summer. Children with cancer and their siblings are welcome to join us any time during the year. Contact our camp registrar at 516-634-4199 for an application and we will get you started. Any program day is a great day to become a Sunrise camper!
