Sunrise
Day Camp, for children ages 3-16, is the only dedicated day camp in the
nation for children with cancer. It is a camp designed to meet the emotional,
social, recreational and physical needs of these children while allowing
them to enjoy the comforts and safety of their own homes at night.
There are sleepaway camps that provide a great experience during the
summer months, but Sunrise offers benefits that a resident camp can’t.
We can provide a true camping experience while not removing children from
their familiar surroundings. Sunrise also serves to compliment the sleep
away camp experience because many last only one to two weeks.
Sunrise Day Camp is operated by the Friedberg JCC, a not-for-profit 510(c)3
charitable organization, which has been successfully running summer camps,
daycare, preschool, after-school activities and services for seniors and
the disabled for more than three decades.
Sunrise Day Camp is situated on the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds, a 300-acre
wooded site that borders Nassau and Suffolk counties. The camp has a nature
center, ball fields, ponds, a science center, art center, a miniature
golf course and driving range as well many special features to best accommodate
chronically ill children.
Best of all, Sunrise Day Camp is offered free of charge to all children
being treated for cancer on a non-sectarian basis. By raising the needed
funds from outside sources instead of charging the parents, we can help
to alleviate some of the costs, and the related stress, that parents incur
caring for a sick child throughout the year.
